Educating children and young people ‘vital’ in the fight against fraud and scams

Primary school children put on their detective hats to learn more about fraud and scams thanks to the NatWest MoneySense programme.

The lesson, held at Prior Weston Primary School in Islington, Central London, on Thursday February 1, saw over 25 children learn how to keep themselves and their families safe from fraud and scams.

The new workshop from NatWest MoneySense, the UK’s longest running bank-led financial education programme, was led by Jane Howard, MD of Personal Banking.

Jane said: “I’m delighted to have been able to deliver one of the first of our fraud and scams MoneySense workshops.

“We know how important it is to teach children how to become financially responsible. And educating them on fraud and scams is vital in the fight to eliminate this growing issue and will help them to keep themselves and their families safe and secure.

“I’d encourage all schools to use these free NatWest resources in their classrooms – its easy to register at mymoneysense.com and our volunteers will be on hand to support you to set up a session.”

MoneySense is the free flagship financial education programme from NatWest for 5–18 year-olds, helping young people to make sense of money and build a better financial future.

The new fraud workshop sees pupils having to solve a number of clues and identify different types of fraud to help them learn how to keep themselves and their families safe from fraud and scams.

Deputy Head Teacher, Jo Pettifor said: “It was great to have Jane and the MoneySense volunteers along to help demonstrate some of the different fraud and scams that exist and how the children can protect themselves.

“They all had a great time taking part in the lesson and figuring out the different clues.

“Teaching young people about money is one of the most important things you can do to equip them for success in the future and it’s never too early to start.

“Fraud is a growing issue in our society and it is great that NatWest has developed this workshop specifically for children and young people.”
