The bank has reached 40th position, its highest ranking to date in the list, which is compiled from submissions to the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index. This sets a benchmark to help companies measure their efforts to create inclusive workplaces for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) employees.

Stonewall received 369 submissions this year from companies across Britain, assessing each against eight areas of good practice, including employee policy; employee engagement; staff training and development and supplier policy.

The ranking means that RBS is in the top 15% of employers (for LGBT colleagues) submitting to the index.

Nathan Bostock, Executive Sponsor of the RBS Rainbow network for LGBT employees, said: “I’m delighted that we’ve made such progress in the Stonewall Employers Equality Index for 2014. The result is an endorsement of all that we’ve been doing, across the organisation, to create a truly inclusive culture where colleagues feel able to bring their whole self to work. It’s also a reflection of the great work being done by the RBS Rainbow network in representing the views of LGBT colleagues, customers and the wider community across the bank.

“I believe that 2013 was a defining year for us – one in which we focused our activities not only on LGBT colleagues, but also on the LGBT customers we serve, the suppliers we work with and the communities in which we operate. This result reflects just how much progress has been made across our organisation as we aim to become a really good bank.”

During the past year:

  • The RBS Rainbow network has been working hard with Nathan Bostock, their Executive Sponsor, to increase awareness and understanding across the bank
  • RBS and NatWest launched their first LGBT nationwide TV advert as part of their mortgage campaign - sending a clear signal to customers that they are inclusive organisations
  • A partnership was established with Diversity Role Models, a charity which focuses on educating young people about LGBT issues and tackling inappropriate behaviour - working in the community to improve understanding

The global co-chairs of the RBS Rainbow network, Callum Pringle and Michelle Pratt said: “We feel that our position in the index reflects that RBS is a really good place to work for LGBT employees.”
