After a mid-year slowdown, December’s PMI readings confirm that the global economy gained momentum into the year-end. But it’s fragile. Activity remains soft by historical standards.

And nothing has changed fundamentally in the global economy compared to a year ago. 2013 therefore holds potential for being the third year in a row with little progress in achieving a strong, sustainable recovery. This would be an unwelcome hat-trick.
