Organised by NatWest's MoneySense for Schools team, speakers giving their views and advice included Chris May from the Money Advice Service, Jan Campbell OBE, Founder of the PHSE Association, Tracey Smith, NatWest's local CEO for Southampton, and Lorraine Sears from NatWest's MoneySense for Schools programme - the largest financial education programme in the UK.
The aim of the day was to provide teachers with the skills to educate their students about finance and managing their money, as well as highlighting the wealth of free and impartial materials that MoneySense offers. The day included sessions which allowed teachers to network, gain confidence in teaching the subject, and share effective and successful ways to teach young people about money.
Commenting on the event Lorraine Sears, NatWest's MoneySense Manager for Southampton and the surrounding area, said: "The importance of financial capability for young people cannot be underestimated and with financial education now firmly on the agenda for schools, the event was all about supporting and equipping teachers to feel confident about teaching money matters. Last year alone, NatWest staff delivered our MoneySense lessons to over 335,000 young people, with over 60% of secondary schools across the UK involved with our programme. We have made a commitment through our Customer Charter to provide young people with financial education and today's event was another step in this journey."
MoneySense for Schools has been developed with teachers to help schools and colleges teach personal money management and enterprise skills within the curriculum. It consists of a series of modules each of which can stand alone or be used in conjunction with others. It aims to engage young people in a variety of role playing scenarios and other interactive learning exercises to give them experience of making financial decisions.
Any schools, colleges or other organisations wanting to find out more about the MoneySense programme, how to get the free materials or how to get the support of a NatWest member of staff, should contact Lorraine Sears, NatWest's MoneySense Manager for the area on 07990 771797, or visit the MoneySense website at www.natwest.com/moneysenseforschools.
