Sanders, Snow & Co

Sanders, Snow & Co (1769-1902), established in Exeter, was a past constituent of NatWest.

Brief history

This private bank was established in newly-built premises in Cathedral Yard, Exeter, in 1769 as Duntze & Co and was also known as Exeter Bank. The founding partners were John (later Sir John) Duntze, William Mackworth Praed, Joseph Sanders and Daniel Hamilton. Duntze was a leading woollen merchant and MP for Tiverton; his family had come from Bremen in north Germany.

The bank was styled Sanders & Hamilton following Duntze’s death in 1789, and Sanders & Co from 1812 until 1901. Branches were opened at Exmouth (1896) and at Budleigh Salterton (1897). In 1901 Sanders & Co merged with Milford, Snow & Co, bankers of Exeter, to form Sanders, Snow & Co. The partners continued to trade under the name of Exeter Bank until 1902 when the bank was taken over by Prescott, Dimsdale, Cave, Tugwell & Co bankers of London.

Branches: The bank opened 2 branches between 1769 and 1902. In 1902 2 branches were operating.
