In the first three months of 2009, the UK economy shrank more than it did in the whole of the 1990's recession. Adding to the misery was the fall in asset prices. Economic advisor, David Rea, explains why asset values are so important and what may help them to rise.

Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) keeps the Bank Rate unchanged at 0.5%
Comment from Stephen Boyle, Head of RBS Group Economics:
"No news is good news. The MPC didn't extend QE meaning the economy doesn't need another shot in the arm - for the moment at least. But a weak recovery will need the continued support of monetary policy makers as households, firms, and soon the government, try to get their houses in order."
