We were one of the first ten financial service organisations to adopt the Equator Principles and we also have a dedicated renewable energy team and are a leading arranger for the sector.

The Equator Principles

The Equator Principles provide a framework for managing the risk associated with project finance. We are members of the steering committee and have helped engage and shape the development of other financial institutions.

In 2007, we were made joint recipients of the Chairman's Award for Leadership in Sustainable Project Finance at the Financial Times Sustainable Banking Awards in recognition of our role in the revision of the Principles.

Decision making process for project finance

Employees working in Project Finance are responsible for reviewing the status of prospective deals. Supported by the Sustainability Team, they receive thorough training on how to assess social and environmental risks and use a risk assessment tool.

In 2007, the Sustainability Team ran training programmes on the updated Equator Principles, supplemented with an e-learning module on our intranet.

Support for renewable energy

In 2007, we committed over $1.5 billion to the renewable energy sector..

We are co-funding Composite Energy's joint project with Strathclyde University and Imperial College London to investigate the potential of storing CO2 within coal beds.

We are the lead funder and finance arranger for the Drum Housing Association based in Hampshire. Drum have recently won acclaim for pioneering work in making its properties more energy efficient.
