Our Priorities
Every year we strengthen the extent and rigour of our consultation with our stakeholders. The issues that matter most to them provide the focus and priorities for activities.
We believe it is important that as many people as possible have convenient access to a full range of banking services, whatever their language or level of income, location or physical capability.
Provision of basic bank accounts
We are the top provider of basic bank accounts with a 31% share of Post Office accessible accounts in the UK. In 2007 we opened:
- 208,608 new basic bank accounts at RBS and NatWest
- 518,139 basic checking accounts at Citizens
- 20,000 Step accounts at Ulster Bank
We are involved with the Trusted Partners project - providing training to employees of the community organisation so they can open basic bank accounts on their own premises. This removes the need for people to come into a bank branch and for many, is an important first step towards full financial inclusion.
Free to use ATMs
In 2007, we:
- installed 272 free to use ATMs in rural and deprived areas. We owned one in five of all free to use ATMs in the UK
- opened 46 new ATMs at Citizens branches and 53 new machines in communities in the US
Enabling access to credit
In 2007, we were chosen as the main banking partner for ScotCash - a new Community Development Finance Institution. ScotCash provides access to affordable credit for people in Glasgow.
Removing language barriers
At Ulster Bank we have added foreign language specialists to a number of branches. We have also published a Welcome brochure with sections in Portuguese, Polish, Lithuanian and Chinese.
At NatWest we launched the Welcome account with full Polish language support through a new Polish Call Centre and Polish website. The account won the Scottish Financial Enterprise Innovation in Banking Award.
Physical access to our network
In 2007:
- NatWest added two mobile banks in Cumbria and Devon
- RBS added two mobile banks in North Wales and Yorkshire
We have upgraded all our branches to improve accessibility and achieved level access in 86% of our branches.
